Fellow Houstonian, Tilman Fertita has agreed to purchase the Houston Rockets franchise for an NBA-record, 2.2 billion dollars.

Fertita is the CEO of a Houston restaurant company known as Landys INC. Ever since the Houston Rockets were put up for sale, Tilman had expressed major interest in the team saying, “I’ve always been interested in the Rockets.” Fertita has owned court-side seats at Rockets’ games for years and said that owning his hometown team would “Be a lifelong dream come true.”

In early July, when the former Rockets’ owner, Leslie Alexander, put the Houston Rockets up for sale, it was widely-believed a buyer from Asia would emerge, mostly because of famed Rockets star Yao Ming. Alexander first purchased the team in early 1993, with the Rockets winning back to back titles in 1994 and 1995 with the help of Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.

Alexander seemed ready to turn the organization over saying, “I am excited to welcome and pass the torch to Tilman. He is a Houstonian, business leader and committed to the success and excellence of the Rockets both on and off the basketball court. I have personally known Tilman for over 24 years and don’t think I could have found anyone more capable of continuing the winning tradition of our Houston Rockets“.

Leslie Alexander, now 74 years old, says he wants to spend more time with his family and work on his charitable projects. The official terms have yet to be released and must be approved by the NBA Board of Governors. Since the NBA has no reason to decline it, the Houston Rockets will likely have a new boss working with them.
