On September 1st, Nike will release the newest colorway of Kevin Durant‘s KD 10s, Red Velvet. The new cupcake-inspired color scheme isn’t just some new playful design; this is an idea seemingly a year in the making.

On July 4th, 2016, the same day that Durant officially signed with the Golden State Warriors, Durant’s former Oklahoma City Thunder teammate Russell Westbrook posted the picture below to his Instagram page. Thus began the KD-cupcake connection that lead to this new design.

Of course, Thunder fans rallied around this idea in both support of their eventual NBA MVP Westbrook and in distaste for their former MVP Durant. In his first game back in Oklahoma City, fans had set up quite the hostile environment for Durant. There were cupcake costumes and hats, cupcake chants, and more than enough body paint. Now, months after winning his first NBA Finals (and Finals MVP), Durant is looking to bury the cupcake nickname by getting the final word in.

The $150 sneakers are University Red and black, primarily using Nike’s Flyknit material. The shoe will also feature black speckling across the mid-sole for some added flair. Of course, the sweetest final touch is the shoe’s photoshoot, completely surrounded by cupcakes.
