The Dallas Mavericks are looking to use shooting guard Wesley Matthews and small forward Harrison Barnes as cornerstones moving forward. The owner of the Mavericks, Mark Cuban, was considering trading Matthews for certain players, but those certain players were not on the market. Matthews has played well in just 42 games so far this season with the Mavericks, averaging 15 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. He has also shot 38.3 percent from beyond the arc.
“We see Wes and Harrison Barnes as cornerstones,” Cuban told Sefko of the 30-year-old Mavs guard. “I think he’s first-team all-defense and those don’t come around very often.”
The Mavericks could still trade Matthews before the deadline on February 23rd. He is on a contract until the 2018-19 season, with a cap space hit of 17 million dollars. Cuban stated that the front office would only trade Wesley for a star in return.
Mark Cuban’s point on Wesley Matthews: He’s not going anywhere unless Mavs get a star in return. He considers Wes a cornerstone.

The 24 year old Harrison Barnes has put up career-highs ever since his departure from the Golden State Warriors. This season he has put up 20.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and is shooting 47.6 percent from the field. He is definitely a strong candidate for the most improved player of the year award. Being that he is at such a young age, he can definitely turn into an All-Star and/or superstar.
For the 30 year-old Wesley Matthews, he is at the end of his prime. He is at the age where players generally slowly start to decline. If he can continue to shoot well, then that will help him gracefully go down hill. He is also a great defender. He can always improve in his leadership, which will help him to be a mentor to younger players.
The Mavericks are not having the prettiest of seasons. They are currently 13th in the Western Conference and have the 27th best record out of 30 teams in the NBA. 15-29 is not the record they were hoping for after they were in the playoffs just last year. They will most likely look to find a potential franchise player in this upcoming draft. This is a good year to be doing poorly because this 2017 draft class is predicted to be one of the better ones.
