Justise Winslow Likely Out for the Season with Shoulder Surgery

Justise Winslow of the Miami Heat is one of the brightest young players in the NBA. He has shown stellar defensive skills and a below average shooting. Winslow has the potential to be a player such as Memphis Grizzlies’ Tony Allen. Allen has shown that he is one of the best defensive players in the NBA, when Kobe Bryant retired he said “Tony Allen is one of the best defenders I had to go against”.

The second year player will miss the remainder of the season for shoulder surgery. The Heat were playing the Boston Celtics at the TD Garden. Justice Winslow was in a tangle with Celtics center Al Horford on the final play of their 117-114 loss to the Celtics. Winslow tore his labrum in his right shoulder. He missed 2 games and was listed as questionable for their Wednesday matchup against the Sacramento Kings. The Heat learned Wednesday that he will need surgery over pain complaints. He is set for surgery Thursday January 5th.

UPDATE: Justise Winslow underwent successful surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder today.

Winslow was having himself a decent year. Currently averaging 10.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assist. Alongside 1.4 steals and 0.3 blocks. However, he was shooting just 35.4% from the field and 20% from behind the arc. Obviously showing he has the potential to be something special in this league. He can play solid defense, and can hit the open mid-range shot with some consistency.

The Heat this season aren’t doing too well this season, sitting 11-26 and 13th in the eastern conference. With Winslow out for an extended time it won’t help their chances to win more games. The Heat haven’t been doing well after the departure of Dwayne Wade to the Chicago Bulls. You can see more on that in my article here [are the bulls going to ride through the east article]. Wade seems like he was the only thing helping the Heat win last the past few seasons.

Hassan Whiteside will have to fill in a lot of the work. He is the only hope for the Heat, if they have any at all. Derrick Williams and James Johnson will have extended role, with the minutes away from Winslow. Johnson has played well with his first season with the Heat after playing for the Toronto Raptors last season.
