Joel Embiid has been one of the most surprising players this year. After missing two consecutive seasons in a row, he jumped out of the gates and produced great numbers. Considering his injury history, Embiid is on a minutes restriction, and he is not yet allowed to play back-to-backs.
Embiid is the frontrunner for the Rookie Of The Year Award. Averaging 20 points per game, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks, while shooting 46% from the field, and 36% from three. Not only has he posted great numbers, but he has also made the 76ers a much better team. The Sixers have already doubled their win-total from last year, and it is not even the All-Star Break.
Embiid has been everything and more than Sixers organization and fans thought him to be. However, he has missed 11 of the last 12 games, including 9 games in a row (which the Sixers are 3-6), due to a knee contusion that he suffered on January 20th against the Portland Trailblazers.
At first, it was just considered as a bone bruise. However, after Saturday night’s game against the Miami Heat, it was reported that Embiid suffered a torn meniscus on his left knee against the Blazers.
The MRI after the Blazers game showed a small tear in his left meniscus. However, they thought it wasn’t that big of a tear to cause pain and inflammation. Nonetheless, after a few weeks they seem to believe that the small tear in the meniscus might be the cause of Embiid’s pain.
The good news is that it a low grade tear, which means to surgery is not required.
This is a blow to the Sixers because he makes them so much better. They are 13-18 with him, and 6-16 without him. However, this gives a chance for more of their young players to step up and get more experience for the future. Players such as Dario Saric, TJ McConnell, and even Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot.
This is also a blow to the fans, because he most likely won’t participate during All-Star Weekend. Many people were looking forward to seeing him during the Rising Stars game as well as the Skills Challenge. All-Star Weekend is about entertaining the fans, and Embiid has proven to be a fan-favorite.
