The New York Knicks have had a roller coaster season so far. There’s been a lot of noise surrounding the team, especially lately, with things like the alleged Carmelo Anthony-Phil Jackson discord and the Charles Oakley incident bringing a lot of undesired attention to the team. However, lost in the chaos of it all is the 28 year-old point guard Derrick Rose.

Rose is no stranger to the NBA’s trade business. He was traded to the Knicks last summer by the Chicago Bulls, where he was drafted first overall in 2008 and spent his first eight seasons in the NBA. During his time in Chicago, Rose was voted Rookie of the Year in 2009, won the 2011 Most Valuable Player award, and made three All-Star appearances from 2010 to 2012. His career was beset by injuries, however, and the widespread understanding is that he was traded from Chicago due to reportedly increasing chemistry issues between Rose and his backcourt mate Jimmy Butler, who was clearly destined to be the future of the franchise.

The hope for New York was that Rose would be able to return to MVP form this season. By uniting Rose and Joakim Noah, who was also acquired in the trade, with Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis, the intention was to create a “superteam” that could bring the Knicks back to the playoffs, and possibly even contend for a higher seed in the East. After a somewhat promising start, things clearly have not gone as expected, as once again, the Knicks are back to their losing ways. They currently sit 12th in the East with a 23-34 record, four games behind the 8th place Detroit Pistons.

Derrick Rose has also had his own drama going on in the midst of the Knicks’ losing season, having disappeared before a game against the New Orleans Pelicans on January 9th, allegedly flying home to Chicago to be with his mother without telling team officials. Rose was fined an undisclosed amount by the Knicks, but played in their next game against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Lately, Rose has openly addressed the possibility of being traded by the Knicks. Speaking to ESPN earlier this week, Rose stated, “I like being here but [you] never know what could happen. My job is to come in and play as hard as I can.” (via ESPN.com) He recognizes that the NBA is a business, and knows that if he is traded at the deadline, then so be it. Multiple NBA teams have reportedly expressed interest in the veteran point guard, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Statistically speaking, Derrick Rose is having a relatively productive year with the New York Knicks. Through 48 games played this season, Rose is currently averaging 17.7 points, 4.5 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game. He is certainly not producing his MVP year numbers, but he still has plenty of value to any team that would be interested.
