In a horrific sequence of events, Boston Celtics‘ free agent signee Gordon Hayward suffered a gruesome ankle injury in the first six minutes of their season opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

While Hoops Nation will not show the injury, here are the basics of what happened. With the Celtics up 12-9 in the first quarter, Boston point guard Kyrie Irving threw an alley-oop pass. Hayward launched up to grab the ball and on the way down fell onto his ankle. TNT announcers Kevin Harlan and Reggie Miller immediately knew what happened, and the crowd gave a resounding “ooooh,” before falling mostly silent. Hayward’s injury may be gruesome, but he will definitely get back up on his feet.

Hayward had joined Boston over the summer in what became a “big three” along with Kyrie Irving and Al Horford. With high hopes heading into the first game, this is not only a devastating blow for Boston but for the league. Teary-eyed players from both teams, including LeBron James, made sure to comfort Hayward as he was carted out. In addition, the stars of the NBA have already begun to reach out and send their love to Gordon.

So far, the injury has initially been diagnosed by Cleveland’s medical staff as a fractured ankle. This article will be updated as more information about Hayward’s injury becomes available.
